Jewelry makes the perfect gift, whether you are giving or receiving. The problem is that many people do not know how to properly care and maintain their jewelry, particular the stones. Using the wrong products might damage the setting, or at least leave behind some dirt and grime. No matter what type of jewelry or stones you have, you can still clean them properly.
Hard Stones
Hard stones is a category that includes cubic zirconium, diamonds, sapphires, and rubies. The best method of cleaning these stones is with warm soapy water and a microfiber cloth. Rub the solution on the stone with one cloth and wipe off with a second. If the stone still looks dirty or dingy, scrub the outside gently with an old toothbrush, rinse, and dry.
Metal Jewelry
Metal jewelry includes pieces made entirely of metal and pieces that mix gemstones with metal. The best method of cleaning the metal is with a specialized cleaner. Liquid cleaners give you the option of rubbing the solution on the metal, or dipping the metal jewelry into the solution. A dry cleaning cloth removes dirt and grime and just requires soft buffing of the metal.
Delicate Stones
The category of delicate stones includes ivory, pearl, amber, and opal stones. Every time you wear the jewelry, remove it and wipe down the stone with a microfiber cloth. The cloth removes oily residues from your hands and face, but will not scratch the surface of the delicate stones.
Durable Stones
Durable stones are stronger than delicate gems, but not as hard as the hardest category. Durable stones include citron, amethyst, garnet, and aquamarine. Clean the stones and jewelry by filling a basin with warm water and a few drops of dish soap or jewelry cleaner. Dip a microfiber cloth in the solution and carefully rub the outside. Wipe down the stone with a damp cloth and gently polish to a natural shine.
Softer Stones
Soft stones are one step above delicate stones on the list because the stones are slightly stronger and more durable. Turquoise, emerald, jade, coral, and topaz all fall under the category of soft stones. When cleaning the stones, use a microfiber cloth and a soft bristled brush. Using harsher cloths might damage the stone and leave behind small scratches or scuff marks. Clean the stones with mild dish soap and warm water, or a specialty cleaner. Rinse the stone carefully with fresh water and pat dry with a soft cloth. Proper cleaning for your stones ensures that the quality lasts for years.
